  Introduction
-

Back pain is the second most common work related condition in the UK and the most common in manual occupations. Reports have estimated that the total cost of back pain corresponds to between 1% and 2% of gross national product.

- It seems our increasingly sedentary lifestyles are to blame. Driving and sitting statically at a computer all contribute towards potential harm to our backs, especially with the additional computer use at home. Repetitive movements and sitting in awkward position for long periods also contribute.
- Where there are no legal requirements for personal home offices, there are for employees within offices and for those employees who work from home. Office furniture must meet minimum standards laid down in the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations, 1992 as amended by the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2002
- Employers should also ensure that they comply with general duties placed on them by other health and safety legislation, such as the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
